Under the Radar?: “Triangle”

Triangle may be one of the most difficult movies I’ve tried to recommend so far.

Not because it’s a difficult movie to champion, quite the contrary, this movie is awesome.

It’s just that… discussing ANY of it can cross into spoiler territory. So how do I put across enough of what’s good about this flick in order to make you want to see it, without ruining any of the juicy goodness when you DO see it?

Melissa George stars as the single mother of an autistic child. There. That’s not too spoilery. LOL

In order to take a break from the rigors of her daily routine, she agrees to go sailing with a handful of friends. On the way, she hits a seagull with her car. An ill-omen of things to come. She shows up for the trip looking pretty haggard, so once they’re out to sea, she asks to take a nap. She has strange dreams and awakes to find the boat is facing a storm. The boat capsizes and the friends are forced to wait atop the floating hull as the boat drifts.

It’s there they see a slowly approaching Ocean Liner. Though they don’t see anyone onboard, the friends have little hope for their lives aside from boarding the ship.

Once they do, that’s when this movie starts to get trippy. At first they can’t find anyone else, and it appears the ship is deserted. But before long they discover that they’re definitely NOT alone, and a game of “Ten Little Indians” unfolds.

Just when you feel like you have a handle on what’s going on, though, the movie will either raise the stakes, twist itself in a direction you didn’t expect, or awe you with the cleverness of how it got you there. This film is billed as a psychological-horror film, but I don’t know if I’d have labeled it as such. It’s a psychological thriller alright, but there aren’t that many horror elements in it. It IS filled with so many twists and turns it’s labyrinthian though. Even when you think you’re done, you’re not.

This is a movie that’s not gonna let you go.

I wish I could tell you more than that, but I can’t. Just trust me on this one and add it to your Netflix queue. You will NOT regret it!

  1. Thanks for the recommendation, somehow I missed this one.

I was in a similar position when I wrote my review of Kill List. Amazing movie, but to say anything would spoil the fun. I’m not looking forward to my review of Triangle….

      • You really don’t want to miss that one when it eventually comes out.

I hit up a lot of movies at the Toronto International Film Festival last week, and it is safe to say that ‘Kill List’ and ‘The Raid’ are really something special. ‘You’re Next’ was right up there too.

I have reviews of all three and they are pretty much spoiler free, so check them out if you’re interested.

      • Just might do that Maven, Just might.

Still catching my breath from the past couple of days though, so it’ll be a little while, LOL.

Are you Canadian, or did you take the trip? TIFF had a lot of good stuff going. Did you catch TWIXT by any chance? I saw the Comic-Con panel and thought… well, maybe… but then I’ve heard the word coming out of TIFF and now I’m like…. eesh.

  2. Canadian born and raised, living in Toronto for about five years, but it was my first time attending TIFF.

I didn’t catch Twixt. I was very excited for it, then I saw the horrendous trailer and steered clear. I’ve heard some people like it, but it sounds like they have to dig pretty deep to find something positive to say.
