Here we go again, folks! Up next we have the MAJOR Award for the Best Supporting Actor! The actors who didn’t headline the film, but brought their A Game nonetheless!
The nominees are: Javier Bardem, “Skyfall”, Leonardo DiCaprio, “Django Unchained”, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, “The Master”, Tommy Lee Jones, “Lincoln”, and Sam Rockwell, “Seven Psychopaths”.

Javier Bardem, “Skyfall”
To me, there was no supporting actor that added more to the film he was in in 2012 than Javier Bardem as Raoul Silva in the latest Bond movie, “Skyfall”. While he certainly wasn’t afraid to ham it up a bit, his character was so enjoyable and added so much to the film that I’m more than willing to allow charisma to trump craft here.
As an ex-MI6 agent with an ax to grind against M, Silva runs up against Bond, and the two trade-off both as opponents and peers. Silva has much more insight to the life of Bond than he should have, and Bond can take a look across at Silva and see a dark future potential for himself. Of course, Bond is too protective of M to allow any harm to befall her, and the battle between the two commences.
Bardem plays Silva with a flamboyant, smug, imbalanced evil. It’s apparent that his character has gone off of the deep end and has no wish to come back. The only thing he cares about is revenge. But he embraces that instability whole heartedly and has fun with his insanity… as if it’s liberated him from the dreariness of being “good”. He has his moments of menace, and his moments of villainous civility. He also has moments where he appears completely off his rocker, but every moment he’s on-screen, it’s so much fun to watch him.
The others awesome as well, of course. I really hemmed and hawed and almost (alllllmost) gave this award to Leonardo DiCaprio instead, but Calvin Candie was a bit… too evil. Phillip Seymour Hoffman was incredible in a role that was onscreen almost as much as the lead, but at the end of the day, he lost out due to the “entertainment” factor. Tommy Lee Jones was great, and I’m sure he’ll see his share of recognition during this awards season, but he was just doing what he does best… being Tommy grumpy Lee Jones. And Sam Rockwell really lit up seven psychopaths with one of the most deliciously ADHD performances ever, but as funny as he was, I couldn’t see him as better than the others here.
But none of them added as much to their film as Bardem did. He was an enormous reason that the immensely enjoyable “Skyfall” was so good.

Fogs' Movie Reviews 
I don’t usually get into Bond films too much, because they’ve got too much stylized macho crap in them for me. (Yeah, I know that’s the reason most people like them.) But I really liked this one, for two reasons. The first was the character arc that they gave Judi Dench, which was brilliant, and the second reason was Bardem’s portrayal. I absolutely loved the scene where he toys with Bond the way that Bond usually toys with his Bond girls. And when Bond replies “What makes you think it’s my first time”, the audience I saw this with went bananas!
I laughed then too, LOL.
It’s cool man, I’ll pretend you never blasphemed against Bond here and we can still be friends. 😉
