Tossin’ It Out There: What’s YOUR Favorite Big Dumb Action Movie?

Olympus has FallenIn honor of “Olympus has Fallen” and “G.I Joe Retaliation”, and to welcome back all our regulars who were scared away by yesterday’s MTESS (LOL), I thought we’d turn our attention to action movies in this week’s discussion.

I thought, however, that a straight up “What’s your favorite action movie” would turn into a debate between “Die Hard” and “Raiders of the Lost Ark”, so let’s add a twist… let’s explore that sub layer of movie that, like “Olympus Has Fallen”, you know are stupid, but you enjoy watching them anyways.

There’s absolutely no shortage of those, and it will broaden the choices up beyond “Die Hard” and “Raiders” (which aren’t dumb). If someone wants to select “A Good Day to Die Hard” though, be my guest! πŸ™„

So what’s YOUR favorite? Will you reach back to something from the heyday of Stallone and Schwarzenegger, or will you choose something a little more recent, like, say, the first “G.I. Joe”? Maybe you’re a Michael Bay fan, there’s so many in his oeuvre that qualify! πŸ˜€

Ok, let’s hear it! What’s YOUR favorite big dumb action movie?!

    • Well, as always, no one has to be first… repeats are welcomed, it’s always about what YOUR favorite is or what your answer would be, doesnt matter if someone beat you to it. πŸ˜‰

I cant wait for Fast 6! Its right around the corner now! πŸ˜€

    • You know? I dont recall. I’ll take your word for it.

I saw it when it came out, but then never again. I recall not liking it, but so many people bring it up its got to have some kind of cultish element to it. I should check it out again!

    • πŸ˜€ I think ALL the Transformers have been pretty dumb. The first one is still probably the best though.

And thanks for the backup, I just “allowed” ID4 as dumb a couple of comments ago, I think it fits the bill, too, Kev!

  1. Daredevil. That one is a freaking laugh riot. I occasionally watch it with my friends, it’s funnier than most comedies out there.

  2. Oh my, this genre is pretty much my specialty, lol. Where do I even begin?

I LOVE Independence Day, one of my all time favorite movies right there. And I was also one of maybe three people who actually enjoyed Battle: LA. And while we’re still on alien-ish movies, I actually liked the first two Transformers, and DOOM!

And going off of DOOM!, video game adaptations have also given us quite a number of awesome big dumb action flicks. Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter certainly fit the bill, as does the entire Resident Evil series. Oh, god bless those movies. XD

Off the top of my head, I’ll also throw out Ninja Assassin and X-Men Origins: Wolverine (shut up, this movie was stupid and ridiculous, but god damn if it wasn’t also fun as hell!), and hell, maybe even Daredevil and the Ghost Riders while I’m mentioning comic book movies. Also, insert any number of Nic Cage movies here. They’re pretty much they’re own genre at this point.

I also watched Boondock Saints II this past weekend, which, while not necessarily big, was certainly still a fun dumb action movie. And I’m sooooooooo pumped for GI Joe 2 this weekend (the first being yet another big dumb action movie I’m a huge fan of)! B)

And I could go on much longer, but I think I’ll stop here for now. XP

    • Holy cow, huh? This one got you going, eh buddy? 😯 πŸ˜€

I have not seen DOOM! Hate to disappoint. Is it cheesy bad enough that I should check it out, or no? LOL at including two of the worst superhero movies ever in Origins and Ghost Rider. πŸ˜‰ Atta boy! πŸ˜€

I actually, am kind of dragging myself to GI Joe 2. Not a fan of #1 really, and the trailers look kind of iffy to me… who knows though, right? Maybe it’ll win me over like Olympus did. And anything with Adrianne Palicki in it’s got to be ok, right? πŸ˜€

      • Doom is pretty cheesetacular, yeah. Definitely qualifies for the “so bad, it’s good” seal of approval in my book at least. And it was an especially fun movie to watch at the movie theater filled with Marines on a Marine Corps base when it initially released. When The Rock starts screaming that he needs for his squad of Marines to act like soldiers, my entire theater lit up! (note: Marines are NOT soldiers, they are Marines. It’s a thing, lol)

Now I’m not saying to go out of your way to see it or anything, but if you do get the chance, you’ll be in for a special little ride, haha. The good in theory but awful in execution first person shooter segment is almost worth the price of admission alone. XP

  3. I have to agree with the people that have said Independence Day — and I’m glad that people are now classifying it as “big dumb action fun” rather than “science fiction masterpiece” the way my contemporaries were when it came out. (Maybe it’s because my contemporaries were juniors in high school at the time….)

Demolition Man is up there, although truthfully I still need to see it all the way through. I’ve seen every part of it at least twice, but I don’t think I’ve ever caught in a straight-through viewing.

  4. “The Rock” has all my favorite things in it, Nic Cage, Sean Connery, things that go “Boom”. There is a car case in San Francisco for no reason at all, there are nasty military guys that betray their commander just as he has betrayed his (with just cause of course) and we get the subtle Michael Bay Touches that always make his pictures memorable; wide angle aerial shots of stuff exploding and hamfisted love stories merged with sentimental tough guy talk.
It’s one of those films that has a great cast everywhere you look. Most of them are just right for the part; John Spencer, Michael Biehn, Ed Harris, William Forsythe, David Morse.
It appears to have a hypnotic effect at this house, if it is on on HD on any of the Satellite channels, then it is on.

    • Oh yeah? It’s a “Black Hole Movie” for you? You can’t escape it’s gravitational pull? πŸ˜€

It’s been awhile since Ive watched it, but its crazy appropriate for today’s topic, LOL.

      Nice mini-review there btw πŸ˜‰

  5. Fun! and I’m afraid that answering this will only make me subscribe to the idea that the movies listed are indeed “dumb” and I don’t think that. I’m not a fan of you making me say that, Fogs! haha πŸ˜€

okay, ummm:The Expendables, Fifth Element, Speed, Con Air, The Last Stand, Mr. & Mrs. Smith and Bad Boys. (If you count Galaxy Quest as “action” then that one’s included)

    • There’s a lot of “Dumb” within that list, T, cmon. You can say it. Start easy, with like “The Last Stand”, then work your way up! Cmon, you have to be able to admit “The Last Stand” was dumb, right? πŸ˜€

I count Galaxy Quest as action, but that’s actually a very clever movie. Mr & Mrs Smith, I think, too. πŸ˜‰

    • Love me some “Drive Angry”, Curiousity… I haven’t seen “Shoot ‘Em Up” yet, though. But I’m happy to hear you choose it, because it was recommended to me earlier, here, and I might wind up covering it in the Reader’s Recommend series!

  6. Predator. (“this shit will turn you intoΒ a sexual tyrannosaurus” so awesome) Demolition Man. T2. Commando.

    • Oh, Dante’s Peak is perfect! πŸ˜€ Brosnan!

Leon’s not dumb, no. Die Hard isn’y really either, though certainly all of its sequels are. I think that series lost IQ points as it went… it kind of went through a regression. πŸ˜€

  7. Dumb action movie? (Frustrated sigh) Honestly, if it’s too dumb for me, I usually can’t watch it. I mean, I like something “2012” when I sit and see it, but it’s not something I’m gonna look for. Um, I guess I’ll stretch the definition of action a bit here, but to turn your head off and watch some for entertainment value, dumb action, middle-of-night, 2am, and you “One Million Years B.C.” with Raquel Welch; it’s pretty enjoyable. Not much to think about, but just something to look at it. I guess I’d go with “One Million Years B.C.”.
