Thank you all SO MUCH… but it’s time for me to roll.

Bender

It’s Thanksgiving, which I think is a perfect time to make this post. Because I’m very thankful and grateful for all support that I’ve received here while running FMR. I had a ton of excellent movie discussions, met a lot of great people online, learned a ton about movies, and had a truly, genuinely gratifying experience writing and being a blogger.

It’s undeniable now though that I have to move on. So I wanted to make an official post to announce it and take one last opportunity to thank you all.

When I began Fogs’ Movie Reviews two and a half years ago,  I had little idea what I was getting myself into. I had been enjoying doing mini reviews on Facebook, a couple of my friends suggested I start a movie blog, and I quickly dove in head first.

Those first six months or so, as I discovered the joy and rewards of writing about movies, were an intense time of doing extremely little aside from work and blogging. I was so amped up on the newfound highs of being a blogger that I filled nearly all of my free time with it. Almost every free moment I had was spent either watching movies or writing about them. It was an unsustainable path, but the stars aligned to Ferris Keyboardfree up my time and allow it to continue on. A unique situation with my employment allowed me to blog directly from work, and then soon after, blog full time during a hiatus between jobs. I took that time and ran with it, dedicating as much time or more to FMR as I had during the initial, intense first few months.

It was a period I enjoyed very much. I saw more movies in theatres than is probably healthy for a person. I tried to watch every major theatrical release, whether they were good, bad, or downright God-awful. I’d watch movies at home, as well, pursuing under the radar films and classics that I had never gotten around to. And after all of the watching, I’d write, trying to post a new piece of content every single day (and many times more than one).

The response, in my opinion, was overwhelming.

shot0146FMR quickly developed a friendly, loyal and knowledgeable community. Numerous people became regular readers and commenters, and their presence only served to attract others. Before long, the commenting here became more valuable than the content, and people were coming not just to read what I was writing, but to join in the discussion and debate.

I achieved some recognition and accolades during the past couple of years as well. WordPress Freshly Pressed FMR four times, which was an incredible honor and a great boon. They also called out my site in their “Daily Post” blog and said some very flattering things. And of course, nothing could top the experience of this year’s Lammy Awards, where I enjoyed unprecedented success. It was an incredible, amazing treat to have a week like that, thank the Large Association of Movie Blogs and everyone else involved, I’ll never forget it.

As everyone knows though, I’m back working on my career, and I have next to no time now to play on the ‘net. I’ll also confess that there are some things I tired of with blogging, as well. Towards the end, I found myself losing the drive to see movies I had no interest in, just in order to get a review up, but I ferris_buellers_day_offalso found myself tiring of reviewing in general. I never envisioned myself as a critic to begin with… I always thought of myself as someone who loved movies enough to write about them. And towards the end I ran out of gas a bit for the point-counterpoint that comes with putting your opinion up for people to sound off on. I think it’ll be refreshing to once again be able to watch movies without having to opine on them officially, and without having to defend my opinion to others.

So, given my current lack of free time, and the fact that I don’t have the insatiable hunger for the game that I once did, the time has come to officially step away from FMR. I realize that I could probably post sporadic, occasional content in order to keep the site on life support, but people who know me know that that’s not what I’m about. I’ll be paying the bills and leaving the blog up (mainly because I can’t bear to delete so much of my own writing), and who knows, maybe one day the winds will change and I’ll find myself wanting to resurrect it. But for the forseeable future, this will be the last post I put up.

I want to thank Morgan and Richard for providing content the past couple of months. You guys have been great, and I appreciate the efforts you’ve given. But I feel badly having you produce pieces here, while I can’t.

I want to thank Dylan Fields and Joel Burman of the Large Association of Movie Blogs. You gentlemen were very welcoming to me, and I know that I got a LOT out of my membership in your organization.

I’d like to thank WordPress for creating such an outstanding platform for amateur writers and for showing me such great support personally.

But most of all, I’d like to thank all my friends, family and fellow bloggers who came here on a regular basis and blessed FMR with a readership and commenting community that became the envy of other bloggers. On any shot0140given post I could count on people to show up and sound off, and on “Tossin’ It Out There” Tuesdays, I would regularly see comment counts hitting 150 and more. It really was impressive, very flattering, and extremely, extremely fun. I had a great time bantering back and forth, learning what movies people loved and which ones they hate, and having people point me in the direction of great films that I had never seen.

It all added up to an incredibly fun endeavor that I got more than my share of praise for. It’s something I’ll never forget.  In the end, I’m choosing to look at it not that I “no longer can” blog, but that I already have. That I had the experience fully and successfully and did it just about as well as I could have possibly hoped.

Thank you all one last time for helping me, supporting me, and enjoying it alongside me.

  1. Good louck Fogs. It was always a pleasure to read your articles and listen to TPMP, so good luck to you in your future.

  2. I’m so sad to see you go, but I can understand the situation you’re in. 😦 Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us. I always enjoyed reading your reviews and posts. This was one of my favorite blogs, and it was a fun place to discuss movies. You will be missed — best of luck to you!

    • Well, thanks Ash, that’s sweet of you to say. I’ll miss doing it! 😦

I had a great time doing it though, and I was really glad and grateful to get such strong support over the years from people. You were a big part of that, so thanks for stopping by and letting me say thanks! 🙂

  4. As Neil Young says Fogs “Keep on Rockin’ the Free World!” in whatever capacity that is. And best of luck in all your endeavors. You certainly have made the blogasphere a brighter place and a how to on engaging viewers of your blog as I happened upon it as a simple innocent bystander wooshed into FMR through WordPress Freshly Pressed early on and became a raving fan. Through FMR I have been introduced to many a movie blog and anyone can find a solid venue to celebrate cinema through Joel’s LAMB or any of the prolific posters like Dan the Man (dtmmr) or the dynamic duo of 70s Richard (fitting video tribute btw) and Morgan R Lewis (who has some great holiday movie highlights already on his blog). I’ve enjoyed being a part of the FMR community. Topics for debate and discussion alway kept things lively. I liked hearing Gelfman’s take on different film like his unique Right Stuff post (and vidclip) and Fast n Furious 6 (i.e. ‘neck punch’). Some top podcast, though all are worthy, include the double Bondathon tribute leading up to James Bond’s 23rd film Skyfall and Jason Gross’s gameshow host podcast #42. There was and unexpected discovery of Liam Neeson in a January release that generated so much fun and podcasting content when DearFilms dot net’s appreciative post was thanked by the director Carnahan and FMR did a joint podcast with DearFilms and FilmYarn about the Grey. I enjoyed your ventures to other podcasts too like your lambcast on the Rocky franchise. My gratitude for FMR churning out meaningful content and comments and continuing with TPM podcasts as possible is immense. I wish you and Tank the very best, and please know that we’re all cheering for you. 🙂
Happily Holidays to the FMR community! 🙂

“Oh, he’s very popular Ed. The sportos, the motorheads, geeks, sluts, bloods, wastoids, dweebies, dickheads – they all adore him. They think he’s a righteous dude.”

    • Heh. I know that tune.

Glad to hear that you FMR helped you connect with other blogs and bloggers, that’s awesome. I always took community building seriously around these parts.

Glad to hear you harken back to the podcasts greatest hits. LOL @ Stink Martindale getting a shoutout. 😀 Hah!!

What a great quote to leave with me man, that means a ton. You know that that brought a smile to my face. Always enjoyed that game, you left more than your share of appropriate quotes over the run of this thing.

You know, I enjoyed doing it too, and I loved having people share it and support it… there’s no doubt you were right there all the time, having FMR’s back.

  5. Say it ain’t so, Fogs!

Nah, I know where you’re coming from, man. I’m trying to find the right balance myself lately. Hopefully this isn’t the last we see of FMR, but if it is, you had a hell of a run. I always loved stopping by here for the great discussions, the MTESS series, and just to see how you would torture yourself by watching dreck like Grown Ups 2.

Best of luck with the new job, old friend!

    • LOL. I did have a penchant for diving into the shitty movies, didn’t I? The truth though is that those movies were fun to review at least. It was all the bland, banal crap in the middle that was tiresome! 😀

Thanks for your patronage along the way, E. It was fun keeping up with TWS as well. 😉

And thanks for the good luck wish with the job. I’ll need it! 😮

  6. Dan, I am just reading this now…sorry to see you go. I wish you nothing but the best! It was a fun ride while it lasted!!! You are smart, witty, and a terrific writer. I for one thank you for sharing your talents! I enjoyed the many conversations/debates I was involved in on your blog. Most notably when Digs and I double teamed another blogger on your behalf, before we realized it was an April a Fools gag. LOL!
My best always. Merry Christmas and a happy healthy New Year to you my friend!!

    • LOL! I had forgotten about that. 😮 You guys went off! It’s a good thing Mark was in on it, you two handed out a serious beating! Ha Haa!! Good times! 😀 That was fun…

And of course, I don’t think either of us will ever look at Daniel Radcliffe the same way again. 😉

Thanks for the massive amount of support you showed along the way Deb, it’s seriously, seriously appreciated. 😀

Happy Holidays to you and yours too Deb, I’m sure we’ll keep in touch!

  7. Hey Fogs! I certainly had my suspicions that you were leaving the blogosphere after not posting on your own blog for a few months. I figured life got in the way as it always does. Anyway, I enjoyed reading your reviews. We disagreed a lot on many movies (of course, you were always wrong, j/k) but it was a lot of fun. And credit where credit is due. Your blog opened up my blog to a lot of new readers and stable crew of commentors. I remember you first posting a comment on Awesomely Shitty, and I thought, “Who is this Fogs guy? I’ll check out his blog.” Good luck in the future with whatever you do. Don’t be a stranger to Awesomely Shitty.

    • Started to suspect, huh? Cant get anything by you Brik 😉

Yeah… I didn’t want to at first, but I knew I was in big trouble when I couldn’t even get around to supporting Rich and Morgan with comments. LOL. 😮

Yeah, it’s true, we don’t always agree. Your choices for classically shitty make me cringe LOL. But it was always fun busting each others chops. I’m glad I helped with the connectivity, I always took bigtime pride in my community building around these parts. We owe it all to Bond, man, I’m pretty sure that’s how I wound up on A.S., you had that Bond retrospective that I ran across somehow….

Dude, I’m definitely going to catch up with Awesomely Shitty in binge fashion every now and then. You’re too &$%*ing funny. 😀

  8. You, along with Underscoopfire, is what got me into blogging two years ago. Proud to say that. I know you’ve inspired more people into blogging and podcasting as well.

Circle of life, man. We all go through life changes so no shame in retiring. FMR (and TPMP) was my go to site if I needed a review of whether or not to check out a movie. Enjoyed the throwback posts and lists too. Hope you and Tank can continue, even if you need to change the schedule or format. Really value your opinions and glad to have been a small part in the TPMP journey.

Best of luck in the career and hope to continue to hear you on TPMP.

    Thanks, bro!

    • Heh. That’s nice to hear man, that I helped “inspire” you. Though I’ve often called blogging a sickness, so perhaps “infect” Is a better word 😉

It is the circle of life. For a long time I had an almost unfair amount of free time on my hands… now I have very little. It’s karma catching up, you know?

We’ll still have some fun on TPMP… Think Dartenmail is long overdue for a return visit! 🙂

  9. Thanks Fogs and good luck to you!…Ahh life….hope you didn’t totally neglect your love life because of blogging and I wish you are getting married soon haha! God bless you Foggy!

    Love,
    Triple L

  10. OH MY! Sorry I just saw this post Fogs. Well I’m sad to see you stop blogging though I totally understand your reasoning. When it stops being fun is when it’s time to hang it all up. I’d like to thank YOU for all the great content you’ve got here, hope one day you’ll decide to return to blogging again. Best of luck with your career and whatever else you’ve set your heart on. God bless you Fogs, and take care!

    • Awww, thanks Ruth! 🙂 It’s been great being peers in this crazy biz, and I wish you all the best of luck with Flixchatter, too. Keep on rocking, people still need their places to hang out and talk movies, and yours is one of the best!! 😀

  11. Damn! where am I going to get my quality movie reviews and intelligent discussions from now eh?
Well, good luck back in the real world, we will all be waiting for your return…….!

    • Ha! Half the time my reviews were off base and the discussions here were madhouse, anyways. 😉 You’ll be alright…. 😀

Nik, seriously though, I appreciate that, and I appreciate your patronage along the way. It’s meant a lot to me. 😉

  12. Wow, Dan. I just wanted to compare my review to your take on The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. But, no, instead, boom, you’re moving on. If there is a way for you to make a living from writing, then that’s where you need to be. At least I assume that’s what you’re doing. Maybe it’s something completely different. As for me, I continue with my bog which shares some common ground with your blog. I pace myself a little more than you did but, even so, I must say that I do put in many, many hours on my blog. It’s done with a sense of integrity, passion, and commitment. And, like you say, you become really good at stealing away any extra time you can find. I have other projects that need my time and, like you, my schedule could dictate what happens next. For now, for the next year, maybe more, I keep blogging away. You will need to write a book at some point. You will want to collect your thoughts and maybe collect a lot of what you’ve posed on your blog. Good luck. Maybe I’ll still get to meet up with you at a Comic-Con.

    • I’d love to make a living from writing, Henry, but I’ll confess I haven’t taken a serious shot at it in any form… except for the blog I guess, I’d have loved to have seen that take off, but it never even got anywhere close to making serious money.

Maybe one day I’ll take a shot with a book or something, maybe one day.

Unfortunately, my comic-con habit may be in jeopardy as well! 😮 If the Con happens in the front part of the month, there’s no way I’ll be able to do it 😦 So… I’m stuck having to root for a late comic-con every year!! 😮

  13. Man, I feel like a terrible person having only just seen this!! Dan, FMR will definitely, definitely be missed!

The community you developed here at FMR was near perfect. I remember when there would be days I’d be coming back over and over again to reply to something or another. That doesn’t happen usually!

Good luck with the future and wherever you end up. Don’t be a stranger now, you hear? 🙂

    • LOL, Yeahhhhhh… as you can tell, I’ve kind of unplugged a little (obviously I haven’t checked in here in two weeks 😮 !! So, don’t worry about having just seen it, I can relate, LOL) but I’ll check in on everyone from time to time.

Thanks for the compliments on the community, that really was the best facet of this place. 😀 It was a lot of fun when it was firing on all cylinders!!

Thanks for the well wishes, Jaina, I definitely appreciate them!

  14. I’ve been on kind of a semi-hiatus (I’m back now), so only just got round to reading this, as I haven’t been visiting many blogs. Sad to see you hanging it up. All the best for the future, hope everything goes well for you in your non-blogging career! 🙂

    • Thanks Monkeyboy. Yeah, I’ve been on a hiatus, myself. LOL

Thanks for the sentiment, I appreciate it, I was a fan of your work and your contributions here, some really funny stuff, man!

Meanwhile, yeah, I think everything will work out ok in the “Real World”. 😉 Should be fine.
