San Diego Comic-Con 2011: Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson Present “The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn”

Ok, everybody. I’ve saved the best for last, and now here it is. Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson together, discussing Tintin, film-making, Their other upcoming and current projects, and some brief discussion of their past projects. It was an incredible thing to be a part of, and I couldn’t be more amped up for Tintin.

San Diego Comic-Con 2011: “Community” Panel

Greetings again everyone!

It’s time for yet another round of panel videos! This one and another today, and then one more tomorrow.

First up is the “Community” panel. Two apologies going in: 1) No Allison Brie. Not my fault. 2) I was able to get in at the last second, but my seats were last second seats. LOL. I could not even see the stage. So I recorded off of the video screen. I know that would bug some people, so I’m putting it out front. Of course, you can still see the panel as it happened.

San Diego Comic-Con 2011: Day 4 in review

Exhausted, sore, cranky greetings from Limburgh Field in San Diego.

Comic-Con has ended. All that remains is the flight home.

Day 4 is a great day at the con. It’s starkly different than the other days, but by day four, that’s a good thing. There’s plenty of time to get autographs, shop for comics, see the booths, and take pictures of costumed attendees.

In terms of autographs, I got a few today, but a special shout out goes out to Richard Hatch and Gil Gerard, both of whom were as friendly and personable as a fan could hope for.

Gerard (Buck Rogers) joked with us over the price of his signing, and when I was joking back, pretty soon He, Jay and I were all laughing. After he was done, we wished each other luck for the rest of the day and he was very genuine about it. He was a great guy to meet, you can’t ask for more than that.

So too was Richard Hatch, who encouraged us to check out Dragon-Con (on my to do list), and took the time to address my question (which was his favorite role, Cpt Apollo or Tom Zarek) thoroughly. It was a great interaction, and he was friendly as can be, too.

I won’t call any celebs out, but for a lot of them that I’ve gotten autographs from it’s such an impersonal transaction that you feel like you’ve been mugged afterwards. Not that I’m under any delusions any celebs would ever read this blog, but if they did, I would say – take note. I am NOT paying $30, $40, sometimes $60 for a picture of you with your signature. I pay that money to MEET you. Just for a minute or two. Typically to get the long held “Thank You” off my chest, sometimes to ask a question, but always, ALWAYS just to share a moment where we engage. Those of you who take my money, rush your sig, and begrudgingly, briefly acknowledge my efforts to speak with you… Well, you could learn a lot from these two guys.

Meanwhile, I photographed the floor pretty thoroughly today. I’ll be posting albums once I get home. I’ll also be returning to regular content postings for all of you sick of this Comic-Con bullshit.

San Diego Comic-Con 2011: Easy Like Sunday Morning

Quick check in during a snack break. Won’t be much to report today. Bought my first comic of the Con, an issue I was missing of Batman’s “Death in the Family” run – the one where fans called in and voted for the Joker to kill Robin and he did.

Congestion is notably down. Only one big panel today… “Glee”.

I will not be in attendance.

To say that costumes have dropped off is an understatement. If you want to see costumes, but are only coming one day, do NOT make it Sunday.

Checks ins will be infrequent today, not much to report.

San Diego Comic-Con 2011: Day 3 in Review

Greetings from the lobby of the Yacht Harbor Best Western in San Diego. Sad but true, this will be my last post from this particular WiFi hotspot, tomorrow at this time I’ll be at a boarding gate, waiting to board my flight home.

Today was another great day at Comic-Con. There’s so much to do at this place that there’s no way to lose.

I began the day at about 7ish, waiting to get in to see Francis Ford Coppola, director of my favorite movie of all time… “Rumble Fish”. Lol, I kid, I kid. He did direct my favorite movie though. I got in, and for the second time in as many days, I had “Front Row” seats (meaning as close to the stage as non VIPs can get).

Coppola began by explaining that in the past, artists used to have to travel with their art in order to monetize it. For example, a composer would have to travel and conduct in order to get money. A theatre troupe would have to travel and put on their play. And he envisioned doing such a thing as a movie maker, so he conducted this… experiment by live editing an extended trailer for his new movie, based on our reactions to the first showing. It was funny, and fun watching him use his editing software and saying stuff like, “wait, that’s not it” and “hold on, almost there”. The crowd really took to it. Was it the career retrospective that I would have preferred? Obviously not. But it was memorable, and entertaining.
