The 2013 Summer Movie Preview – Part 1

Summer is finally upon us! With this Friday’s release of “Iron Man 3”, the 2013 Summer Movie season officially begins!

The summer season is defined by big budget, high-profile releases, and this summer is no exception. We’ll cover what’s coming out in May and June today, and then look at July and August tomorrow.

Now Showing on Cable: “30 Minutes or Less”

Opening this weekend on Starz was last year’s “30 Minutes or Less”.

Starring Jesse Eisenberg, Aziz Ansari, Danny McBride, Nick Swardson, and Michael Peña, “30 Minutes or Less” is the story of a pizza deliveryman who is forced to rob a bank after having a bomb strapped to him. As dark a prospect as that is, the movie is a comedy.

So the question before us becomes, does comedy ensue?

Now Showing on Cable: “Your Highness”

Making its long awaited debut this weekend on HBO was last year’s “Your Highness”, the medieval sword and sorcery stoner comedy starring Danny McBride, James Franco and Natalie Portman.

It’s the story of two princes. One is the golden glamour boy, constantly triumphing on quests and adventures and furthering the glory of the kingdom.

The other is Danny McBride.

Now showing on cable: “Due Date”

Premiering Saturday night on Cinemax was 2010’s “Due Date”, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Zack Galifianakis.

In it, Downey plays a man who needs to fly home for the birth of his first child. But after an incident prior to take-off where he and Galifianakis are mistaken for terrorists, both are forced off the plane and put on the no fly list. As Downey’s character is unable to take his bags off the plane prior to take off, he has no ID and no money with which to rent a car. Enter Galifianakis, who he already can’t stand due to the aforementioned “incident”, but who happens to be also headed to Los Angeles. Downey begrudgingly accepts his offer of a ride and they embark together on an uncomfortable cross country journey.

Comedy occasionally ensues.
