Movies I Want Everyone to See: The Taking of Pelham 123 (1974)

Taking_of_pelham_one_two_threeI recently spent the weekend with some friends and a guy I know well, and have been friends with for more than thirty five years, had the audacity to suggest that the remake of this film was more entertaining than the original. I instantly dropped my jaw, exclaimed loudly that he had to be kidding and then proceeded to disagree in a condescending manner. I have to apologize for the tone, it was not called for and I would not want my friend to be angry at me because I mocked his preference for the 2009 version. I do want him to know and understand that although I liked the Denzel/Travolta film, it can’t really hold a candle to the original and that vigorous defense of the 1974 classic  begins now as I once more recommend a movie that I want everyone to see. Flight

“Flight” has been sold to us as a story of an airplane pilot who makes a miraculous crash landing, only to test positive for alcohol after the incident and wind up being unfairly persecuted by the regulatory agencies investigating the crash. In truth, Denzel Washington’s character, Whip Whitaker, is a fully blown alcoholic and drug addict, and the film revolves around substance abuse and the struggle for recovery more so than it does the crash and its investigation.

Alright! We’re back! Another awesome episode of TPMP in the can!

This week, Mr (Tank) Tanski and I go over the two biggest releases – “John Carter” and “Silent House”, and I throw in my two cents on the latest Eddie Murphy stinker “A Thousand Words”.

It was an interesting week at the box office, too, there were definitely some surprises in this week’s “Box Office Roundup”, so check it out!

And then for our feature discussion, Tank and I take turns throwing out some sci-fi suggestions for you. In honor of “John Carter” we felt it appropriate to recommend a wide variety of movies, covering the sci-fi spectrum. We’ve got cheesy movies, hidden gems, hardcore classics… the only ones we stay away from are the big blockbusters like Star Wars and Star Trek, etc… You already should have seen THOSE. 🙂

It’s another great episode for you, we hope you enjoy it! You can download it directly here or look for us on iTunes! If you do check us out via iTunes, please remember to give us a rating and a review, those really help us out! 😀

You can find us on Facebook here in order to follow all the goings-on with TPMP all week long!

Safe House

Denzel authors another bad ass.

This time it’s Tobin Frost. CIA legend. Frost was a high-profile agent who specialized in interrogation. He later defected and has been on the run and off the grid for nearly a decade. Suddenly he shows up at a US Consolate office and turns himself in.

He’s brought to a CIA safe house run by rookie Matt Weston (Ryan Reynolds). When the safe house is breached, Weston is forced to grab Tobin and go on the run.

Let the games begin.

Tossin’ It Out There: What do YOU think of Denzel Washington?

“Safe House” comes out this weekend, and I have to say, I’m looking forward to it. I know, I know, there are some bad signs. The Feb release date, the fact it doesnt have any reviews out yet… but we may get to see Denzel totally acting menacing and too smart for Ryan Reynolds (and Reynolds looking dumb ass, LOL)!

Regardless of how that movie turns out, I thought it was a good excuse to turn our discussion this week to the man himself.

He’s a two time Academy Award winner (Glory and Training Day) who’s been known of late for his action movies (4 out of his last 5). But he’s had a 30 year career now… so if you want to see him in something different, there’s plenty to choose from. In fact, his filmography is pretty varied. And has tons of great movies.

What are YOUR thoughts? Are you a fan? What’s your favorite movie of his, or your favorite character he played? Do you wish he would turn his attention back to Oscar worthy films, or are you happy to see him kicking ass and taking names?

What do YOU think of Denzel Washington??

Now showing on cable: “Unstoppable”

Premiering this weekend and now making its rounds on HBO was Tony Scott’s “Unstoppable”, starring Denzel Washington and Chris Pine. The 2010 action films tells the story of a runaway train loaded with hazardous materials, speeding unattended towards residential areas through rural Pennsylvania.

Scott is no stranger to action films, having helmed such films as “Top Gun”, “Crimson Tide”, and “Man on Fire”. He’s also the man behind the Tarantino penned “True Romance”.

So with Scott at the helm and Washington in the lead, one can expect a pretty good movie, right?

Well, they were both behind the remake of “Pelham 123″…
