Featuring incredible special effects, a fantastic premise, and fun, colorful (albeit goofy) characters, “Pacific Rim” is a summer spectacular well worth catching on the big screen.

Mama

Mama

“Mama”, produced by Guillermo del Toro and starring Jessica Chastain and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, has a unique, captivating high concept for a horror movie. When two young girls are abandoned in a cabin in the woods, they’re raised by a ghost, who becomes protective of them, following them even after they’re found and reintegrated into society.

For quite a significant portion of its runtime, “Mama” had me pretty absorbed into the story, and even provided a couple of decent startle moments along the way.

Unfortunately, I have to take the entire movie into consideration here, and at the very end, “Mama” flies right off the rails.

San Diego Comic-Con International 2012: This is why Comic-Con is World Renown

This is why people camp out overnight.

Hall H today is why television networks cover the convention.

Why people travel from all over the world. Guam. Brazil. Canada. England. Heard them all this week. All over.

This is why Comic-Con is worth the big bucks, the headaches, the sleep deprivation, the hunger pains, the bursting bladder, the sore back, the blisters on your feet.

This is WHY.

Because you just do NOT GET stuff like this anywhere else.

Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark

WOW. I did NOT see that one coming.

“Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark” is a movie that’s been on my radar for a long time now, primarily due to the involvement of producer Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth). But I don’t think I ever had high expectations for it.

First off, it stars Katie Holmes. Meh. I knew that the “creature” of choice were “Imps” or “Gremlins”. O… K… It was being released at the ass end of August – not a good sign. So when the Rotten Tomatoes score settled on a 58 for this movie, I was totally prepared to go see it, come home, do my duty here, and be done with it.

But wow. I have to admit. I liked this movie A LOT!
