Ok, everyone, here we go! The second half of the Summer slate for 2013! There’s plenty of big movies in store, and of course, a handful of DOAs.

42

“42” tells the true story of Jackie Robinson, the Hall of Fame baseball player who was the first African-American to integrate the sport in 1947. For this, he received animosity from other players, incredibly nasty heckling from the fans, and an enormous volume of hate mail and death threats. Through it all, he persevered… not only to change the game, but to become great at it.

It’s a powerful story, inherently, and “42” tells it in a straightforward, conventional, albeit entertaining way.

YES! We made it through the Winter Movie Season, where Hollywood unloads their junk on us, and now we’re headed into the Spring!

Spring is a time for mini-blockbusters, and movies that Hollywood hopes will have decent runs. Last year, “The Hunger Games” was released in March, for example, and we all saw how well that did!

The 2011 FMR MAJOR Awards: Nominees for most Disappointing Movie

To order our nominee announcement and awards presentation threads over the next couple of weeks here, I decided let’s let the “Worsts” go first, and Ladies before Gentlemen.

Thus I present to you the nominees in our first category for the inaugural FMR MAJOR Awards. The most disappointing movies of the year, all vying to be called “The Biggest Disappointment.”

In order to qualify for this category, the movie first has to have raised some degree of promise or expectation, and then have not lived up to it. “Don’t believe the hype!”

Here are the candidates for “Biggest Disappointment” of 2011.

Top Ten Scenes George Lucas Should Improve On

A long time ago in a galaxy far away…

George Lucas created a movie trilogy known as “The Star Wars Trilogy”. But that was over 30 years ago, and since then, he’s improved on them greatly, and completed the saga by creating the prequel stories which fill in all the details of the back story that fans were dying to know!!

News broke this week that Lucas, the auteur that he is, has revisited his original movies yet again with another round of improvements! Which got me thinking – because he’s obviously NEVER going to stop improving them for us – where else could he improve the dialogue? Where could he add subtle touches like Darth Vader’s new “NOOOOOOO!!” cry that would enhance our original trilogy experience?

Movies That Everyone Should See: “Blade Runner”

Early in the 21st Century, THE TYRELL CORPORATION advanced Robot evolution into the NEXUS phase – a being virtually identical to a human – known as a Replicant.

The NEXUS 6 Replicants were superior in strength and agility, and at least equal in intelligence, to the genetic engineers who created them.

Replicants were used Off-world as slave labor, in the hazardous exploration and colonization of other planets.

After a bloody mutiny by a NEXUS 6 combat team in an Off-world colony, Replicants were declared illegal on earth – under penalty of death.

Special police squads – BLADE RUNNER UNITS – had orders to shoot to kill, upon detection, any trespassing Replicant.

This was not called execution.

It was called retirement.

Cowboys & Aliens

I don’t know if calling “Cowboys & Aliens” a disappointment is fair. I really didn’t have high expectations for it, so when I came out of it feeling like I saw a decent movie, what I should feel is pleasantly surprised.

But there’s a lot of talent surrounding this film. And after attending Favreau’s “Visionaries” panel, which he shared with Guillermo del Toro, I really wanted this film to be excellent.

Unfortunately, it’s not. It’s not bad, but it’s certainly not great, and in the end I wound up wishing they had just made a straight up Western instead.
