Movies I Want Everyone to See: Get Shorty (1995)

Review by Richard Kirkham

This summer has been a cruel one for fans of “Get Shorty”.  In June, James Gandolfini who played Bear the enforcer for Bo the Drug Dealer/wanna be movie producer, passed away at a relatively young 51. Last month, Dennis Farina who played Ray “Bones” Barboni left us at 69. This last week, Elmore Leonard the novelist and screenwriter responsible for the story and characters in the first place, left us at age 87. I’m not suggesting there is a curse or anything, but if this film does not get included before anyone else from the cast dies, I will feel terrible. “Get Shorty” is a star vehicle, and it featured John Travolta in a great part immediately after his comeback role in “Pulp Fiction”. In spite of the obvious star driven nature of the film, there is a great ensemble cast that adds to the quality of the movie and makes it something I think everyone will be glad to have seen.

The Incredible Burt Wonderstone

The Incredible Burt Wonderstone

Two stale Vegas magicians meet their match in the form of a performance artist who steals their audience. Old school and new collide in a battle to be Vegas’ top act.

Featuring a couple of egomaniacal jerks (played by Steve Carell and Jim Carrey) who do battle via magic acts, “The Incredible Burt Wonderstone” is certainly a movie that will give you a laugh or two along the way, but might not be anything to rush right out and see.

New Episode of The (title pending) Movie Podcast with Tank and Fogs

PodcastHappy Wednesday everyone, here’s this week’s (title pending) for ya!

This time up, Tank and I cover this week’s big new release starring Brad Pitt, James Gandolfini and Ray Liotta… “Killing Them Softly”. Then, I cover “The Collection”, while Tank swings back and updates us on his thoughts on “Rise of the Guardians”!

Once we wrap up our reviews, we launch into a discussion of the career of Brad Pitt. Mr Tyler Durden himself. His best roles, his comedies, how freaking crazy we think his Chanel commercial is. LOL.

All that, plus the Box Office Roundup and On the Radar, and you have a fantastic episode of (title pending) goodness! Check it out! You can download it directly, here, or as always, search for us on Stitcher Radio or iTunes using the keywords (title pending) or Tank and Fogs!

Killing Them Softly

Killing_Them_Softly

Brad Pitt plays a cold-hearted hit man called in to clean up after a mob poker game, run by Ray Liotta, is robbed. To do so, he’ll need the help of another trigger man, played by James Gandolfini.

As highly enjoyable as such a recipe sounds, it didn’t manage to come together for me onscreen as well as I’d hoped. As sad as I am to say it, “Killing Them Softly” is more like “Killing Them Slowly”, with other notable flaws mixed in along the way.

Under the Radar?: “In the Loop”

20111108-231413.jpg

“In the Loop” is a British comedy, revolving around bureaucracy, communication, idiocy and war, not necessarily in that order.

After a dim witted, mid level cabinet minister misspeaks on a tv show, saying, “War is unforeseeable”, the British and American governments both begin to prep themselves for war. War hawks and Peaceniks both mobilize, hold committee meetings, push position papers, and square off face to face.

It’s very much like a political version of “The Office”, except with a War looming.

And lots and lots of swearing.
