Four magicians are assembled by a mysterious benefactor in order to pull of high stakes crimes using their skills of deception and illusion.
Unfortunately, the filmmakers aren’t as good at movie magic. “Now You See Me” is entertaining, but wouldn’t withstand the slightest scrutiny.
Opening this weekend on Starz was last year’s “30 Minutes or Less”.
Starring Jesse Eisenberg, Aziz Ansari, Danny McBride, Nick Swardson, and Michael Peña, “30 Minutes or Less” is the story of a pizza deliveryman who is forced to rob a bank after having a bomb strapped to him. As dark a prospect as that is, the movie is a comedy.
So the question before us becomes, does comedy ensue?
Making its debut on home tvs via the magic of premium cable this weekend was last year’s animated flight of fancy, “Rio”. Brought to you by the creators of “Ice Age”, the film features celebrity voicing courtesy of Jesse Eisenberg, Anne Hathaway, George Lopez, Will.I.Am, Jamie Foxx, Tracy Morgan and Jemaine Clement.
It tells the story of a Blue Macaw (voiced by Jesse Eisenberg), “Blue”, who was raised in captivity as a pet. When it’s discovered that he’s one of the last remaining birds of his species, he’s returned to Brazil with the intention of mating him with a female Blue Macaw (Anne Hathaway) who is currently held in captivity.
Of course, she’s not too keen on the idea. Nor is she fond of being held in captivity. So it’s not long before the mismatched couple are on the run… With one major problem.
“Blue” can’t fly.
For those of you who subscribe to Starz, tonight is the premiere of “The Social Network”, the 2010 David Fincher film starring Jesse Eisenberg which tells the story of the founding of Facebook. Based on the 2009 book “The Accidental Billionaires”, by Ben Mezrich, this movie certainly can’t be accused on not being topical. LOL.
While the movie does show how everyone’s favorite social networking site got its start, it’s actually about the high price of success, money, and being smarter than everyone else you know.
