“Epic” is an animated action/adventure movie from the people who brought you the “Ice Age” franchise and “Rio”. In it, a plucky young girl finds herself magically miniaturized and thrown into the middle of a battle for the future of the forest.
Up tempo, occasionally humorous and brightly animated, “Epic” is sure to fit the bill for families and kids looking for a trip to the movies.
Summer is finally upon us! With this Friday’s release of “Iron Man 3”, the 2013 Summer Movie season officially begins!
The summer season is defined by big budget, high-profile releases, and this summer is no exception. We’ll cover what’s coming out in May and June today, and then look at July and August tomorrow.

Premiering this weekend on HBO was this year’s “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island”.
Starring Dwayne Johnson, Josh Hutcherson, Vanessa Hudgens, Luis Guzman and Michael Caine, this “family friendly” film posits that Jules Verne’s “Mysterious Island” actually exists.
When a young man gets a coded transmission from his adventurer grandfather, he and his stepfather head off in search of the legendary island, only to discover more than they bargained for. Along with the family crew of the downed helicopter they chartered to get them there, they’ll have to find a way not only to survive, but to escape the “Mysterious Island”.
Aimed squarely at kids, this film needs to be given a little bit of slack for its juvenile sensibilities and slight characters. But not too much…
Ok, folks, here we are! One of the major movie release seasons of the year is upon us, The Holiday Movie Season!
The Holidays started a little early this year, with “Skyfall” (undeniably a major release) opening in the first week of November. So we’re underway! Between now and the end of the year, we’ll see some of the biggest films on the 2012 docket get released, including the conclusion to the “Twilight” Saga, “The Hobbit”, and “Django Unchained”!

Boom! Another episode of (title pending) for your enjoyment! This time, we talk about – what else? – “The Hunger Games”!
It had a titanic opening weekend at the box office, and was really the only major new release. That’s ok, because Tank and I have you covered, putting the box office success it had into perspective, clearing up the comparisons between it and “Battle Royale”, talking about the book to movie comparisons, and of course, reviewing the film!
Then in this week’s “Extra Features”, we list some of our favorite battle scenes! It’s another awesome episode, check it out!!

Based on a novel by Suzanne Collins, “The Hunger Games” is the first of a planned trilogy of films revolving around a futuristic society that holds a televised annual celebration featuring children pitted against each other in a fight to the death.
Unfamiliar with the source material, and frankly, a little underwhelmed by the promotional campaigns (at least in proportion with the pre-release hype), I went in to “The Hunger Games” with little to no expectations.
I left highly enthused, though.
“The Hunger Games” is a gripping drama that builds a lavishly detailed setting, unfolds a clear and interesting narrative, gets you highly invested the protagonist, and then lets the games begin.
Sorry, I’ve fallen a little behind on my movies due to the whole Comic-Con thing. This movie actually hit cable a couple of weeks ago. It’s making its rounds now on HBO.
“The Kids Are Alright” is the story of two teenaged children of a lesbian couple who seek out the sperm donor the women used… their biological father. The kids arrange the meeting on their own, but once the Moms learn about it, they insist on meeting him themselves.
Essentially the movie is a relationship dramedy with Ruffalo’s character, Paul, being the straw that stirs the drink. Paul is a laid back, earthy, single restaurant owner. His interjection into this family unsettles the prim and proper Nic (Bening) and reaffirms Jules (Moore). Soon the women are bickering as the balance of power between them shifts. His influence also acts as a change agent in the life of the two kids. Before you know it, you have an entire family questioning their relationships to each other…
