Turbo

Dreamworks Animation’s latest offering is the story of a snail who dreams of being fast enough to race. Through a freak accident, he’s empowered with speed that allows him to do just that.

It’s a bit of a strange choice for a feature, but DreamWorks is talented enough to turn the story into a mildly entertaining animated film.

Despicable Me 2

despicable me 2

Three years ago, the original “Despicable Me” took everyone by surprise by offering a film with comically inept, soft-hearted villain who was slowly won over by three children. Now Gru, his family and his minions are back, only this time, he’s working for the good guys and finds himself facing romantic entanglements as well.

It’s an entertaining summer film, but in spite of its best efforts, it can’t live up to the magic of the original.

The Hangover Part III

hangover_part_iii_ver7

In 2009, Todd Phillips and co. had a surprise smash hit with “The Hangover”, a movie about three men who awaken from a night of blackout drinking to find they’ve lost one of their friends. They then have to recreate the events of the night before in order to retrace their steps and find their friend. In 2011, Todd Phillips and co. had another smash hit with “The Hangover Part II”, a movie about three men who awaken from a night of blackout drinking to find they’ve lost one of their friends. They then have to recreate the events of the night before in order to retrace their steps and find their friend.

“Part II” was widely criticized for being a regurgitation of the first film. It was nearly a note for note facsimile, and critics punished it accordingly. In response, Phillips and co. pledged “The Hangover Part III” would not be “the same old thing”. Instead, they made a movie that has little to do with anything fans love about the first two films.

No drunken debauchery, no blackout, no “Hangover”.

Worst of all, few to no laughs.

The Muppets

I couldn’t be happier to bring you this news.

“The Muppets” isn’t just good, it’s great. For fans from the “Old Days” it will be a joyous reunion. A thorough reminder of why you loved them to begin with. For children and young people who are new to the Muppets, you’ll love meeting them. They’re going to be characters you’ll love for the rest of your life.

It’s a song and dance comedy spectacular that’s full of laughs, feel good story moments and wonderful, colorful, comical characters. It literally gave me chills at several points, and I sat watching it with a grin ear to ear from beginning to end.

Muppets fans? Raise your expectations 100%. I guarantee you leave saying “That was SO awesome”.

San Diego Comic-Con 2011: “Community” Panel

Greetings again everyone!

It’s time for yet another round of panel videos! This one and another today, and then one more tomorrow.

First up is the “Community” panel. Two apologies going in: 1) No Allison Brie. Not my fault. 2) I was able to get in at the last second, but my seats were last second seats. LOL. I could not even see the stage. So I recorded off of the video screen. I know that would bug some people, so I’m putting it out front. Of course, you can still see the panel as it happened.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon

Transformers. The unreviewable movie franchise. I like them, but they suck at the same time. How is that even possible?

Everyone knows the deal by now. Don’t ask too much of it, dont think too hard, and you’ll be rewarded with some great special effects.

Actually though, in a couple of surprising ways, this movie became a little more than that (not much more mind you) and certainly, easily, became the best Transformers movie to date.
