The World’s End

Similar to their previous collaborations with director Edgar Wright (“Shaun of the Dead” and “Hot Fuzz”), “The World’s End” features Simon Pegg and Nick Frost as friends coming to the realization that they’re surrounded by hostile forces. This time out it’s robots, who have taken over the town where they and their friends went to school together.

“The World’s End” feels a bit scattershot at times, but fans will consider it part of its “charm”. It’s a film that has a bit of bittersweet nostalgia for misspent youth, a bit of railing against the conformity of the world, and plenty of sequences where middle aged men kick robotic ass.

The 2013 Summer Movie Preview – Part 2

Ok, everyone, here we go! The second half of the Summer slate for 2013! There’s plenty of big movies in store, and of course, a handful of DOAs.

Snow White and the Huntsman

In all honesty, I had rejected this movie in my mind prior to going into it.

Snow White is not some warrior in shining armor leading an army. She’s not. Snow White wears that blue and red and yellow taffeta dress with the poofy freaking shoulders and when she’s not hanging with her dwarfish friends or chowing apples, she sings to birds. Ok? That’s Snow White.

So perhaps this is all overreaction to my complete underestimation of it, but “Snow White and the Huntsman” was an excellent, highly entertaining movie. More than just a retelling of the Snow White tale, it’s an epic fantasy story, replete with mythical creatures, knights in armor, a princess in a tower and a very, very wicked witch.

I don’t know if it’s the fairest of them all, but it’s easily worth a trip to the movies.

Now Showing on Cable: “Paul”

Opening on Cinemax this weekend was “Paul”, 2011’s Alien comedy starring Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Seth Rogen.

“Paul” is the story of two British UFO fanatics who come to America for Comic-Con, then plan to take a mini cross-country tour of famous UFO hotspots across the southwest.

They don’t expect to actually encounter an alien though.

Especially one that talks like Seth Rogen.

The Adventures of Tintin

“The Adventures of Tintin” is the story of an intrepid reporter and his scrappy dog who get swept up into a global adventure after purchasing a replica wooden ship from a street vendor. Based on the series of comics by Belgian artist Hergé, “Tintin” is the first animated feature to be directed by Steven Spielberg, and his first full length forray into the world of motion capture technology.

His influence is unmistakable, as Tintin takes off on an Indiana Jones-esque adventure in search of treasure. There are wild action sequences, interspersed with family friendly comedy, and an overarching spirit of adventure.

There were a few missing elements for me which keep me from calling it great, but there’s no doubt that anyone who was looking forward to it will be pleased, and it’s well worth your box office dollar this holiday season.

2011 Holiday Movie Season Preview!!

This year, the start of the Holiday Movie season is November 18^th. That’s NEXT weekend already folks!! That’s when Hollywood releases “Happy Feet Two” and “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1”, two movies with valid expectations of large takes at the gate. The start of the second blockbuster season of the year!

Here are the movies coming up this Holiday Season that I’m most excited for. Check out Wednesday, December 21^st! “The Adventures of Tintin”, “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo”, and “Mission Impossible, Ghost Protocol”! That’s going to be a busy day!
