Dreamworks Animation’s latest offering is the story of a snail who dreams of being fast enough to race. Through a freak accident, he’s empowered with speed that allows him to do just that.
It’s a bit of a strange choice for a feature, but DreamWorks is talented enough to turn the story into a mildly entertaining animated film.

Ok, everyone, here we go! The second half of the Summer slate for 2013! There’s plenty of big movies in store, and of course, a handful of DOAs.

“Rock of Ages” is a unapolagetic mash-up of 80s pop-rock and hair metal music, loosely held together by a storyline of stereotypical rock and roll elements: the wide-eyed midwest ingenue coming to LA, the busboy with the desire to be a big star, the scumbag agent, the skeevy middle-aged club owner, the Tipper Gore-esque crusader, and of course, the larger than life rock star who’s lost touch with reality.
If you “ain’t lookin’ for nothin’ but a good time”, you’ve found it. There’s actually a lot of fun to be had here.
It does, however, get better than this.
It’s been awhile since I’ve posted an “Under the Radar”, so just to refresh anyone new to the site, this series is my look at smaller films – not necessarily indie films – but, just movies that I feel a lot of people probably haven’t seen.
As recommended by my podcasting partner in crime, Chris “Tank” Tanski, this entry is on “Win Win”, a 2011 “family” drama from Fox Searchlight Pictures.
I put the “family” in quotes as many of the core players in this film have familial relationships without actually being related, while others, though related, treat each other very poorly…
Ok boys and girls, this post announces the winner of the Best Supporting Actor MAJOR Award for 2011.
I put up five actors who I felt contributed the most to their films in spite of a limited amount of screen time. They weren’t the leads, but they made a fantastic contribution to their film.
The nominees are: Albert Brooks, “Drive”, Robert Forster, “The Descendants”, Paul Giamatti, “The Ides of March”, Nick Nolte, “Warrior”, and Christopher Plummer, “Beginners”.

In the short time that I’ve been doing this movie blogging thing, I’ve come across the “Head vs Heart” conundrum several times already. Only usually, it’s the reverse of the situation I’m in now. See, typically it comes up when I’ve just watched some movie that I know most critics are going to call a piece of crap, and I recognize as a piece of crap, but I find myself coming up with excuses for why I enjoyed it.
Now, however, I just got back from a movie that… by all objective measures was excellent. It’s excellently acted, it has a very complex and engrossing plot, and Clooney did an excellent job calling the shots. The film looks great.
I just can’t get past the fact… I didn’t LIKE it that much.

By 2008, I had completely soured on M Night. “The Lady in the Water” was that bad. I honestly had no expectations of him any more, and no anticipation of his future projects. If he was atop my favorite working directors list in 2002, he was nowhere near it in 2008.
Which is why I was surprised when trailers for his next film, “The Happening” were intriguing. It was apocalyptic looking and moody, and features that great shot he got of bodies falling through the air.
What if “The Lady in the Water” were an aberration? I mean, you take that movie out, and the guy’s filmography was awesome. Three great flicks and one ok one. So maybe he just had one wild idea and he whiffed on it. I mean, even if it sucked, it was still…. unique. What if now he was pissed off over being called a hack, and this movie was his return to form? With a vengeance?
Oh my God no. No, no, no. LOL.

In the summer of 2004, M Night Shyamalan was the hottest Director in the World. His name was selling tickets to the extent where the promo poster for that summer’s “The Village” has essentially NOTHING on it except his name. “M Night Shyamalan’s The Village”, some wooden planks, a stripe of paint. In those days, that was all his movies would need. It opened with a $50 million dollar weekend.
A funny thing happened though.
It wasn’t any good.
