The Place Beyond the Pines

Place beyond the pines

“The Place Beyond the Pines” is an epic tale of crime and corruption, and fathers and sons.

It’s a generational tale, complete with bank robberies, kidnappings, corrupt police officers, drug deals, and death. It’s a lengthy tale that shifts perspectives multiple times. Regardless, it will hold your attention all the way through, as the drama grabs hold and doesn’t let go.

The 2013 Winter Movie Season Preview

Winter

Ok, boys and girls. The Holiday Season is over… and the Spring Season, full of mini Blockbusters, is still months away.

Between now and then lies Hollywood’s dumping ground. The Hollywood fields lie fallow in the winter, bearing little quality product. It’s the two months of the year we need to “Get through”. While January typically offers some limited releases from the prior year going wide, there’s typically little else to get excited over.

Will this year be different? Are there any movies to get excited about these next two months? Let’s take a look at the release slate and see what we’ve got!

Now Showing on Cable: “Crazy, Stupid, Love.”

Premiering on HBO this weekend was last year’s comedy about romance, “Crazy, Stupid, Love.”

In it, Steve Carell stars as a man whose wife suddenly requests a divorce. Left depressed and disillusioned, Carell is offered advice by a local lothario (Ryan Gosling) for regaining his masculinity. Thus begins a comedy about romance, relationships and resiliency.

With an all-star cast and a fun script, “Crazy, Stupid, Love.” was a very entertaining comedy, and an easy movie to recommend to you all.

Chick Flick City: “The Notebook”

20111028-230301.jpg

Welcome back to “Chick Flick City”, the series where I address estrogen deficiencies in my personal filmography by watching movies recommended by YOU, the readers. Up this week, the rain soaked “The Notebook”.

Because I’ll tell ya, that image above is the overwhelming impression of this movie for me. I’ve never seen this flick, but I’ve seen that kiss 8,602 times. Posters, commercials, send-ups, etc… Why couldn’t they go inside? What, they’re at some lake or something? The phrase “get a room” comes to mind. Not because I want them to take it out of my sight, I… I want them to get dry.

Will I change my mind? Will I finally understand, or will I still wish they had brought an umbrella?

The Ides of March

In the short time that I’ve been doing this movie blogging thing, I’ve come across the “Head vs Heart” conundrum several times already. Only usually, it’s the reverse of the situation I’m in now. See, typically it comes up when I’ve just watched some movie that I know most critics are going to call a piece of crap, and I recognize as a piece of crap, but I find myself coming up with excuses for why I enjoyed it.

Now, however, I just got back from a movie that… by all objective measures was excellent. It’s excellently acted, it has a very complex and engrossing plot, and Clooney did an excellent job calling the shots. The film looks great.

I just can’t get past the fact… I didn’t LIKE it that much.
