Summer is finally upon us! With this Friday’s release of “Iron Man 3”, the 2013 Summer Movie season officially begins!

The summer season is defined by big budget, high-profile releases, and this summer is no exception. We’ll cover what’s coming out in May and June today, and then look at July and August tomorrow.

Movies That Everyone Should See: “Superbad”

Fogell: Yo guys! Sup?
Seth: Fogell, where have you been, man? You almost gave me a goddamn heart attack. Let me see it. Did you pussy out or what?
Fogell: No noooo, man. I got it; it is flawless. Check it!
Evan: [examining the fake ID] Hawaii. All right, that’s good. That’s hard to trace, I guess. Wait… you changed your name to… McLovin?
Fogell: Yeah.
Evan: McLovin? What kind of a stupid name is that, Fogell? What, are you trying to be an Irish R&B singer?
Fogell: Naw, they let you pick any name you want when you get down there.
Seth: And you landed on McLovin…
Fogell: Yeah. It was between that or Muhammed.

The Guilt Trip

“The Guilt Trip” is a comedy revolving primarily around one single source of humor: Barbara Streisand uncomfortably over-mothering Seth Rogen. She leaves too many voicemails, gets way too personal with her questions, overshares, won’t stop talking, etc etc…

If that sounds horrifying to you, stay away. The “Guilt Trip” has literally nothing else of value to offer. If that sounds tolerable to you, this slight comedy ultimately has a sweet tone and will give you a mild chuckle or two along the way.

The 2012 Holiday Movie Season Preview

Ok, folks, here we are! One of the major movie release seasons of the year is upon us, The Holiday Movie Season!

The Holidays started a little early this year, with “Skyfall” (undeniably a major release) opening in the first week of November. So we’re underway! Between now and the end of the year, we’ll see some of the biggest films on the 2012 docket get released, including the conclusion to the “Twilight” Saga, “The Hobbit”, and “Django Unchained”!

The 2012 Fall Movie Preview – Part I

With this weekend’s release of “The Expendables 2” and “ParaNorman”, the summer movie season is pretty much over. One weekend remains in August, and those movies wont have much room to run before school is back in session.

Nope, the season of the big blockbuster is behind us. It’s time to look ahead to the fall.

Not to despair, though, the fall brings sharp movies for the thinking movie fan. Movies which may have more selective box office appeal, but which may be some of the best movies all year.

So click through to take a look at the first part of this year’s fall preview. Today we’ll look at the last week of August, plus September, and then we’ll come back tomorrow with October and the first week of November. Together they’ll take us right up to the start of the Holiday movie season, and the November 9th release of Skyfall!

Now Showing on Cable: “Paul”

Opening on Cinemax this weekend was “Paul”, 2011’s Alien comedy starring Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Seth Rogen.

“Paul” is the story of two British UFO fanatics who come to America for Comic-Con, then plan to take a mini cross-country tour of famous UFO hotspots across the southwest.

They don’t expect to actually encounter an alien though.

Especially one that talks like Seth Rogen.

Movies That Everyone Should See: “Kung Fu Panda”

Kung Fu Panda is the story of Po (voiced by Jack Black), a portly panda who lives in a village at the foot of a mountain, atop which is a legendary Kung Fu temple. Po dreams of being able to learn Kung Fu, and of joining the exploits of the temples famous martial arts warriors, The Furious Five.

But being a Panda, and thus… a large individual to put it kindly, Po seems destined to a common life serving the customers at his father’s noodle shop.

Little does he realize the greatness he’s destined for.

50/50

I was SUPER skeptical of “50/50” going in. I figured the title was pretty apt –  that 50/50 was just about the chance I’d have of liking it.

I mean, a cancer comedy? To me, that just seemed like an insurmountable oxymoron. Those two things do NOT go together. Added to which my “Tearjerker Alert System” was going off like mad. DANGER! DANGER!

But, in light of my newfound responsibilities as a movie blogger, and in the wake of some extremely positive early reviews… I headed in to watch the story of a young man diagnosed with cancer, and his buddy who tries his best to help.

I’m glad I did.

Now showing on cable: “The Green Hornet”

Premiering this weekend on Starz was this January’s buddy comedy/superhero flick, “The Green Hornet”, starring Seth Rogen and Jay Chou.

Rogen stars as Britt Reid, son of a millionaire publishing magnate. When his father passes away suddenly, Reid inherits his father’s newspaper, his mansion and his fortune. However, unbeknownst to him, the most valuable thing he inherits is the service of a skilled martial artist and mechanic who was in his father’s employ… Kato (Chou).

Both hilarity and action ensue.
