The Great Debates: Star Trek or Star Wars?

Undeniably these two franchises are the biggest sci-fi franchises in pop culture history. Both heavily involve space travel and sci-fi concepts, and the fact that the both have the word “Star” in their names invited comparisons right from the beginning. This is truly a debate that’s been around for decades, and with the opening of a new chapter in one of the sagas this weekend, I thought it would be a good time to revisit it.

With rumors circulating that Harrison Ford may reprise his role as Han Solo in “Star Wars: Episode VII”, I figured it was the perfect time to get the great debates going again… with one of the big ones.

Tossin’ It Out There: What do YOU think of JJ Abrams directing the next Star Wars movie?
Word broke last week that JJ Abrams will be handed the reigns of the first Disney owned Star Wars production, the as yet untitled Star Wars VII. Obviously, this was a huge story and the internet exploded.
I want to know what YOU think. As a producer, Abrams has made a number of famous television projects and a couple of films, but as a director his filmography really boils down to three films, “Mission Impossible III”, “Star Trek”, and “Super 8” (with another Star Trek film pending).
What do YOU think? Is that enough? Are you excited over the announcement? Does your geek brain recoil at the cross-over between the Star Trek and Star Wars universes? Do you think we’ll be able to WATCH a lightsaber duel with all that lens flaring?

George Lucas sells Lucasfilm (and thus Star Wars) to Disney
I don’t often blog about movie news here at FMR.
But this is enormous news, and bears discussion. I feel as though I need to say something. This is an unimaginable story. Seriously… could anyone have imagined this prior to today?
George Lucas has sold Lucasfilm to the Disney for $4.05 billion. Disney has already announced their intention for a new Star Wars film (Episode VII) in 2015, and a new movie every two to three years after that.
I’ve been having trouble concentrating on anything else since I heard this news… I had to put something up right away, so that anyone who wanted to could discuss.

Tossin’ It Out There: What’s YOUR Favorite Movie Franchise?
Both major new releases this weekend – “Paranormal Activity 4” and “Alex Cross” – were installments in a pre-existing franchise. They weren’t just sequels to movies, they were third or fourth chapters.
And certainly, we’ve got a lot of Bond talk going on around here lately.
But “Franchise” is the new norm nowadays. From “The Hunger Games” to “The Hobbit”, studios don’t seem to want to just release one movie anymore. They’re all looking for that steady, bankable franchise that will provide them with an annual boost to the bottom line a la Harry Potter. Certainly they’re nothing new, there have been movie franchises as far back as there have been movies. It just seems that now, they’re the rule, and not the exception.
That’s ok though, many of the greatest movies of all time were part of a broader franchise, and if you fall in love with the franchise on the whole, there’s so much for you to look forward to!
Which is your favorite? Do you still stick with “Star Wars” in spite of the prequels? Do you think Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings is the one franchise to rule them all? Maybe you’re a Trekkie, or a horror buff. I know there’s a few people out there who are going to answer with James Bond!

New Episode of The (title pending) Movie Podcast with Tank and Fogs!! – The Hunger Games
Boom! Another episode of (title pending) for your enjoyment! This time, we talk about – what else? – “The Hunger Games”!
It had a titanic opening weekend at the box office, and was really the only major new release. That’s ok, because Tank and I have you covered, putting the box office success it had into perspective, clearing up the comparisons between it and “Battle Royale”, talking about the book to movie comparisons, and of course, reviewing the film!
Then in this week’s “Extra Features”, we list some of our favorite battle scenes! It’s another awesome episode, check it out!!

New Episode of The (title pending) Movie Podcast with Tank and Fogs!!
Alright! We’re back! Another awesome episode of TPMP in the can!
This week, Mr (Tank) Tanski and I go over the two biggest releases – “John Carter” and “Silent House”, and I throw in my two cents on the latest Eddie Murphy stinker “A Thousand Words”.
It was an interesting week at the box office, too, there were definitely some surprises in this week’s “Box Office Roundup”, so check it out!
And then for our feature discussion, Tank and I take turns throwing out some sci-fi suggestions for you. In honor of “John Carter” we felt it appropriate to recommend a wide variety of movies, covering the sci-fi spectrum. We’ve got cheesy movies, hidden gems, hardcore classics… the only ones we stay away from are the big blockbusters like Star Wars and Star Trek, etc… You already should have seen THOSE. 🙂

Tank shakes off the rust and we go over four flicks that one or both of us have seen, “Safe House”, “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island”, “The Woman in Black” and “Chronicle”! Plus we do our weekly breakdown of the Dollars at the gates – the “Box Office Roundup”, before we eventually head into our feature discussion…

Yes… In light of the recent rerelease of “The Phantom Menace”, the Tankster and I revisit the eve of the original release of the second trilogy, discuss our reactions, and reflect on the CGI redos of the originals.

Top Ten Scenes George Lucas Should Improve On
A long time ago in a galaxy far away…
George Lucas created a movie trilogy known as “The Star Wars Trilogy”. But that was over 30 years ago, and since then, he’s improved on them greatly, and completed the saga by creating the prequel stories which fill in all the details of the back story that fans were dying to know!!
News broke this week that Lucas, the auteur that he is, has revisited his original movies yet again with another round of improvements! Which got me thinking – because he’s obviously NEVER going to stop improving them for us – where else could he improve the dialogue? Where could he add subtle touches like Darth Vader’s new “NOOOOOOO!!” cry that would enhance our original trilogy experience?
