2012 was an incredible year for movies, with an abundance of huge blockbusters that delivered on their promises, and your typical mix of Oscar worthy material in the mix as well. This list could have turned in to a top 20 with ease.

But I made the tough calls, and whittled it down to just ten.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

hobbit_an_unexpected_journey_ver4

Peter Jackson returns to Middle Earth with a worthy prequel to his “Lord of the Rings” trilogy in “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”.

“The Hobbit” is much lighter in tone, and stuffed with action sequences, but remains a shining example of how modern fantasy films should be crafted.

It has an incredible pedigree to live up to, but I think “The Hobbit” adds to the franchise proudly.

New Episode of the (title pending) Movie Podcast with Tank and Fogs!!

Hey everybody, we’re back! Sorry for the one day delay, Skype issues on recording night pushed us back a day 😦

But we’re here with a brand new, haunted episode for you! The TPMP studios has its share of supernatural activity… Tank and I attempt to ferret it out at the outset, but playing it back, I don’t think we were 100% successful.

We were, however, successful in reviewing “Paranormal Activity 4” and “Alex Cross”, this week’s pair of new releases. After, we launch into our Winter preview. Tank and I take a look at the schedule for the rest of the year, and discuss all the films that 2012 still has to offer us. And what a slate it is… a new Bond film, “Skyfall”, a new Peter Jackson Middle Earth movie, “The Hobbit”, and a new offering from Quentin Tarantino, “Django Unchained”! Plus a slew of other great movies of various size and scope between now and 12/31!

It’s another great episode of (title pending), you owe it to yourself to check it out! You can download it directly, here, or as always, look for us on Stitcher Radio and iTunes by searching for (title pending) or Tank and Fogs!

Tossin’ It Out There: What’s YOUR Favorite Movie Franchise?

Both major new releases this weekend – “Paranormal Activity 4” and “Alex Cross” – were installments in a pre-existing franchise. They weren’t just sequels to movies, they were third or fourth chapters.

And certainly, we’ve got a lot of Bond talk going on around here lately.

But “Franchise” is the new norm nowadays. From “The Hunger Games” to “The Hobbit”, studios don’t seem to want to just release one movie anymore. They’re all looking for that steady, bankable franchise that will provide them with an annual boost to the bottom line a la Harry Potter. Certainly they’re nothing new, there have been movie franchises as far back as there have been movies. It just seems that now, they’re the rule, and not the exception.

That’s ok though, many of the greatest movies of all time were part of a broader franchise, and if you fall in love with the franchise on the whole, there’s so much for you to look forward to!

Which is your favorite? Do you still stick with “Star Wars” in spite of the prequels? Do you think Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings is the one franchise to rule them all? Maybe you’re a Trekkie, or a horror buff. I know there’s a few people out there who are going to answer with James Bond!

Let’s hear it though, what’s your answer? What’s YOUR Favorite Movie Franchise?

San Diego Comic-Con International 2012: This is why Comic-Con is World Renown

This is why people camp out overnight.

Hall H today is why television networks cover the convention.

Why people travel from all over the world. Guam. Brazil. Canada. England. Heard them all this week. All over.

This is why Comic-Con is worth the big bucks, the headaches, the sleep deprivation, the hunger pains, the bursting bladder, the sore back, the blisters on your feet.

This is WHY.

Because you just do NOT GET stuff like this anywhere else.

San Diego Comic-Con International 2012: That’s the way the cookie crumbles

Greetings from the line for Hall H, on Saturday at 5:30 am (well, when I began this post at least). I got up at 4, was here by 10 after 5 or so…

And I have never been further back in line for an event. I cannot even SEE Hall H right now. The Lawn is completely full of campers, the sidewalk across the street was full of campers, the line loops around the grass and back by the bay. I got up at 4 am, and now wonder if I’ll even get in.

I spent my time last night updating all the photos, and never got around to a summary post, so I figured since I have TIME (LOL), I might as well write up my adventures from yesterday. Read on!
