Catching the Classics: Risky Business

risky_businessSince 1998, I have been maintaining a list of movies that I wanted to see. Sometimes these are all-time classics that passed me by, sometimes they’re genre classics that interest me. The list grows regularly and is currently more than 1800 movies long. Fogs has gone through and hand-picked several classic films for me to “fast-track” and review here. This is one of those films.

We all know the scene. Tom Cruise. Pink dress shirt. Boxer shorts. Bob Seger. He slid into his parents’ living room and into the American consciousness. The scene is ubiquitous in lists of iconic movie scenes. I probably saw the scene itself or homages to it thirty times before I even knew who Tom Cruise was (I was four years old when Risky Business came out). It can be a little odd checking out a film when one scene is already thoroughly engraved in memory through years of repetition.

Tom Cruise stars in a sci-fi tale of duplicity and deception in “Oblivion”. As a drone tech stationed on the ruined Earth, he slowly comes to discover that all is not as it seems with his assignment.

The resulting tale is one of sci-fi drama and intrigue, mixed with occasional bursts of action. It’s an enjoyable, though not entirely original, science fiction movie.

Jack Reacher

Jack Reacher
Tom Cruise stars as Jack Reacher, a type of “only in the movies” character that’s certainly fun to watch. Reacher is an ex-Military Policeman who lives off the grid now, roaming the country and fighting injustice freelance like a one man A-Team. Smarter than the cops, and tougher than the bad guys, Reacher is a righteousness dealing machine.

Sadly, the scenario the film embroils him in leaves something to be desired, but Cruise’s Reacher manages to make an impression nonetheless.

Movies That Everyone Should See: “Top Gun”

With the passing of Tony Scott last week, I knew that I wanted to feature one of his films as this week’s MTESS.

There were a number of choices… as I studied his filmography, I was surprised at just how many really good movies he had left us.

But there really was only one choice to feature first. It’s the movie that the media deemed his biggest, often mentioning it in the headlines last week right alongside his name. It’s a quintessential “Tom Cruise movie”, and a shining example of the slick, entertaining action movies that were so in vogue in the 1980s. A movie that has earned a permanent name for itself in pop culture.

“Top Gun”

Rock of Ages

“Rock of Ages” is a unapolagetic mash-up of 80s pop-rock and hair metal music, loosely held together by a storyline of stereotypical rock and roll elements: the wide-eyed midwest ingenue coming to LA, the busboy with the desire to be a big star, the scumbag agent, the skeevy middle-aged club owner, the Tipper Gore-esque crusader, and of course, the larger than life rock star who’s lost touch with reality.

If you “ain’t lookin’ for nothin’ but a good time”, you’ve found it. There’s actually a lot of fun to be had here.

It does, however, get better than this.

The Top Ten Tom Cruise Movies

Alright, alright.

Let’s do another one of these things.

After the relative success of my Top Ten Ridley Scott Films a couple of weeks back, I feel ok enough with these to take another crack at them. This time up? A Top Ten with an even higher level of difficulty, the Top Ten Tom Cruise Movies.

Mr. Cruise has been in a number of high quality films over the years, this was an extremely difficult list to whittle down. There are a number of really excellent films that didn’t make my cut… including some of his truly iconic roles.

Please keep in mind, these aren’t necessarily ordered by his performances, this would be what I would consider an attempt to rank his best movies. Of course, there are a few films of his I havent seen, I think I have all the major bases covered though.

With those disclaimers out of the way, read on!!

After a couple of guest hosting gigs, it felt GREAT to be “home” on the (title pending) Movie Podcast with Tank and Fogs!

This episode we break down three movies out in theatres now… “The Sitter” with Jonah Hill, the second installment of Robert Downey Jr.’s Sherlock Holmes franchise, “Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows” and the blockbuster action movie, “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol”.

Listen in for a great discussion on those flicks, plus advice on how to save money on your taxes, how to help your kids find the self-respect to stand up to bullies, plus the real reason science can’t isolate the Higgs Boson (God) Particle!!

Ok, none of that other stuff… but you know what you’re getting! It’s (title pending) awesomeness! You can download it directly, by clicking here, or search for us on iTunes! CHECK IT OUT!! 😀

Tossin’ It Out There: What do YOU think of Tom Cruise?

“Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” opens wide tomorrow. It was an awesome flick and is getting great reviews, but one of the big concerns going in was – would Tom Cruise still sell as an action star?

We’ve had 30 years of Tom Cruise now. He made his big screen debut in 1981. He has 37 films on his IMDb page. That’s a large body of work.

But a lot of people tuned out during his crazy time, when he was attacking Oprah like the Emporer, and then telling Matt Lauer that he was an expert on the history of psychiatry. MI:3 bore the brunt at that time… will MI:4 as well?

So what do YOU think of Tom Cruise? Can YOU handle the truth? What are your favorite movies of his? What are your favorite Tom Cruise breakdown moments? Would you rather your favorite Hollywood Stars practice voodoo than Scientology? Was Les Grossman enough to win you back?

Let’s hear it!! 😀
